The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) awarded six Yeshiva students the prestigious Activist of the Year award at its most recent policy conference, which featured over 6000 participants and approximately 1200 students from 391 campuses. Representatives attended from all the 50 states as well Canada.
This award recognized the political activism of Avi Posnick, Jackie Saxe, Alex Boris, Maytal Fligelman, Shira Lankin, and Shira Orbachwhich.
In just under two years, these students transformed our campus' love and passion for the state of Israel, typically expressed through cultural and religious venues, into a potent political force to be reckoned with.
Avi Posnick, head of the Yeshiva University Public Action Committee (YUPAC) and one of the award winners, was proud of his fellow award winners and that Yeshiva students "demonstrated their passion for political activism and were an asset to the Pro-Israel community," he said.
This passion manifested itself in the founding of College Democrats and College Republicans, the recruitment of dozens of students for AIPAC's campaign training institute, their volunteer work in political campaigns in three different states, a legislative mission to Washington DC which consisted of thirty two students from across twenty Congressional Districts, and culminated with a fifteen person delegation to the AIPAC Policy conference.
AIPAC recognized that "over the last year, Yeshiva activists have broken new ground, helping an enormous number of pro-Israel students cross the political threshold for the very first time. They have exhibited extraordinary political acumen, and set a new standard of excellence for pro-Israel activist across the country," said AIPAC spokeswomen Jennifer Cannata, in an official press release.
Yeshiva honored these students with a special reception, held on March 22, 2007, that was heavily attended by the Yeshiva administration. The reception was sponsored by the CJF and the Office of Student Affairs. Rabbi Kenneth Brander, AIPAC Rep. Daniel Ginsberg, Avi Posnick and Jackie Saxe, and Dean Zelda Braun spoke at the reception, which took place in the sky caf of Belfer Hall. Dean Braun summed up the entirety of the AIPAC delegation's contribution by explaining how they took their love for the land of Israel, and their belief in the viability of the U.S. Israel relationship and didn't stop with the theoretical but brought it into practicality.
Mr. Posnick recognizes that "Political activism is about establishing a relationship over time," and that lobbying must be repeated in order to achieve maximize effectiveness. He further hopes that "Winning awards shows the beginning of what Yeshiva students can really offer and that this can serve as the foundation for the continuation of such activism in the future."
